The summer had barely begun and Serenity was already exhausted.
Normally, this was the time she spent skipping from city to city, avoiding authorities and scrounging food from where ever she could find it. The most 'work' she ever did was the occasional side-of-the-road knife show to earn a buck or two. This time, however, it was much different. Being eighteen, she was finally able to settle down in one place as she was no longer under the threat of being tossed back into the retched foster care program. On top of that, she had found a pretty stable job as beater for the Sweetwater All-Stars. It wasn't her first choice of career but it was better than nothing. Every penny she made went towards her funds for Aridorn. With what little remaining time she had after practices and extra practices, she filled with more work at a small, run-down taco shack near her new flat.
With her schedule as it was, it was rare she was able to find just a moment to relax and be by herself. She sat with her back against a tree in the dewy grass at Central Park casually taking in the setting. It was a chilly morning for the summer but she didn't mind. She had her favorite hoodie on and had stretched it around her knees. If it hadn't been a public place, she might have fallen asleep then and there. It was so peaceful compared to every place else. Unfortunately, it was a public place so Ren forced herself to stay alert. She would glance around her shoulders every now and again, checking for suspicious behavior, mostly out of habit. There were no threats here.
As she became more relaxed, she started looking at the different sorts of people, taking in faces and clothes, strides and expressions. New York was such a vast place. But then, she was used to vast places. When she had graduated Salem, she had considered moving somewhere small and leaving the big cities she normally made her home behind. But then she realized that sort of place would never feel like home. She needed a place she could get lost in, somewhere full of monstrously huge buildings that dwarfed even the tallest man. She wanted a place so full of people that you saw new faces everyday, no matter where she went. And so she chose New York.
She glanced around the crowd once more before closing her eyes for a brief second. She wasn't going to sleep. she was just... Enjoying herself, taking in the sounds and smells instead of the sights.
