She definitely considered this a date, and it was a good one. James was showing her an amazing time in Alabama, and getting to know his parents was something that she had been nervous for before. She was scared that they wouldn’t think that he was good enough for him, or that she wasn’t right for him. Being with James made her happy; he was everything that she could ever hope for in a relationship. He made her feel safe and secure. Like no matter what happened between the two of them, so long as she was able to get back into his arms, the world would be okay.
“Sounds amazing, I’ve been trying to get my Momma to take me back to Romania to meet my cousins. I think they’re in Romania anyway.” Her mother was a Romani, and traveled to America when she was eighteen to explore the new territory. Within a few months, she was married to Renee and pregnant with Renee Junior. She never regretted what happened and settling down with her family was apparently one of the best things to ever happen to her.
When James kissed her on the cheek, Charlotte felt her heart do a quick flip in her chest. Even the chaste kisses between them were something that she loved. He never pressured her into having sex and it was comforting. They were only starting in their relationship, they would have a few kisses between them, they would hold hands and snuggle up together. Maybe one day it would become more, but first, she wanted to get to know him as a boyfriend. She wanted to know that his parents were supportive of their relationship and she wanted to make sure her parents felt the same way.
“If you ever need help remaking a truck, you know who to call.” She smirked at him and figured that James would be the type to appreciate her skill with an engine. Charlotte was the last woman alive who was going to be stuck by the side of a road, helpless with a flat tire. She knew how to change a flat tire, reattach a fan belt, change the oil in her car, everything.
Charlotte held James’s hand when they walked to the unicorn pen. She couldn’t believe that this was a typical sight for the Richardsons. They could look at a herd of unicorns and not think anything about it whatsoever. For Charlotte, this was amazing. Her family would never believe that she was able to see this. Her sisters would call her a liar and her brother would make some sort of snarky comment about it.
“It’s one thing to learn about unicorns in Care of Magical Creatures call, m’am, it’s a whole ‘nother to actually see them.” She smiled when his mother mentioned that James would be an amazing Care of Magical Creatures professor one day,
“Salem should only be so lucky to have someone as knowledgeable as him leading the class.” Charlotte gently nudged James so she would know that they both believed in him.
Continuing on with James and his mother, she looked over the pen for the Pegasus and up at the netting. The Richardsons seemed like they were able to think of everything with their creatures. They were a successful business and strong family through it.
“How old do they have to be to get to roam around?” It seemed like there was so much more to be able to see in the enclosures, and this was a pretty amazing date for them.
She laughed when he mentioned the breeds drinking whiskey, for some reason a mental image of drunken winged horses was hilarious for her. All of them stumbling over each other to get to the troth of booze, wearing party hats and streamers tangled in their wings. She tried to follow along with what James was saying, but was just watching them walk around and play together. The young foals seemed to be tripping over each other, having fun in the bright summer sun.
“I’ve seen those before, both thestrals and hippogriffs.” She was able to see them both while she was at Hogwarts. When she was a young girl, Charlotte was on the bayou with her father checking on some of their crawfish traps and another fisher pulled up next to them to chat with Renee. Charlotte could remember sitting and playing with some of the crawfish that they already caught when the other man’s boat tipped over. Renee couldn’t use magic to save the muggle, so he jumped in after him. By the time he was able to pull the man up; he had already hit his head on some jutting rocks. Renee pulled the bleeding body out, and Charlotte looked up from her new crawfish friend to see the life leaving the man’s body.
“Your farm is amazing; I still can’t believe that you’re able to do all of this, Mrs Richardson. You must be very proud.”
