“You need shoes Jackie,” Cooper said with a huff. ”I could only find one though!” The little boy said as if that meant clearly the universe didn’t want him to have shoes. The man put his hands on his hips and looked around the living room. “What shoes were you looking for?”
”The boo ones with monsters”
“We might have to go with a different pair buddy.” His son was showered in everything, cloths, shoes, toys. When he was a baby they hardly had to do laundry with how many outfits his mother alone gave him and his wife. Cooper walked over to the door and grabbed Jackie’s boots. “Come’er” He said and motioned for the five year old to sit down next to him
Jackie obeyed his father and climbed onto the couch sitting next to Cooper. “Mkay give me your foot.”
”What! Hold on!” The little boy shouted and then pulled his striped socks all the way up so they hit his knees. ”There, now” Satisfied Jackie held one foot out for his father. Cooper laughed “Why did your ma’ let you wear those socks,” He mused and stuck one boot on making sure the tops were folded over. On went the other boot. “Mkay, you sure you got everything? Uncle Harrow lives a little bit away so if you forget anything we can’t get it.” Even if they were going to be apperating to Hawthorne Village Cooper knew if he even once said that he would go back and get something his son had forgotten he would spend most of the weekend poofing back and forth and not visiting. He was trying desperately to make sure that his little boy didn’t turn out like a spoiled brat.
“Mmmm wait! What about Mister Patch Bottom?” Jackie said eyes wide and frantic. “You had ‘im this mornin’ bubb, do you think maybe he is at the breakfast table?” Cooper suggested. ”I got him here my sweet little man.” Lenore came in with a smile and stuffed kangaroo. On it’s butt was a large green patch. ”You be careful with him now Jackie, don’t want old Mister Patch Bottom to get lost” She handed the little boy the stuffed animal and planted a kiss on his forhead.
”Yes moma,” He chirped and wrapped his arms around the kangaroo.
Cooper turned his attentions to his wife who was now wrapping her arms around him. “Do you think it’s a good idea to let him take that one? Harrow has a couple dogs.” He then said quietly and wrapped his arms around her waist like he was practiced to do. He had all the actions down. He cared about the woman in his arms. He just wished that he loved her.
”I’m sure he will be fine, you and Harrow can make sure that he doesn’t leave ‘im anywhere that it can get ruined.” She smiled up at her husband. ”You two got everythin’ packed? Extra underpants for him his night light and blanket? Oh the praline’s I made for him and …what was his boyfriends name?”
“Felix, and they are actually lookin to get married now.”
”Oh you didn’t tell me, let him know I say congrats.”
“I will, and yeah we got it all sugar. We should probably get goin or we are gonna be late, especially cause that one will wanna explore before we even get to the house.”
”M’kay, check in when you get there and at least once in a while while you are out.” She got up on her toes and kissed her husband. Cooper kissed her in return, the action just as second nature as the way he held her. ”I love you.”
“Love you too,” Cooper responded and walked over to where two bags were, one plain, black and expencive. The other was yellow with illustrated sharks all over it and just as expensive. “Jackie say bye to your ma’ we are gonna get going.”
”Okay!” He scampered over to the woman , kangaroo tightly in hand and wrapped his arms arounf her legs. ”Have fun little man, behave for uncle Harrow and Felix” She planted a kiss on the top of his head. Jackie then ran to his dad. “Okay hold on to me tight and don’t let go” Cooper instructed. He had thought about driving, or a plane even. He had only apperated short distances with his son before. The farthest to their second home in Texas.
With a small pop they ended up on a street corner in Hawthorn Village. It looked exactly the same as the last time he had been there. Cooper looked down at the little boy who had his eyes closed tight and arms wrapped around his leg the stuffed animal pinned between a small arm and his thigh. “You good Jackie?”
The little blond looked up and blinked a few times. He took some time to look around him and then smiled wide ”Yeah where are we!?” Cooper set down his son’s bag and extended the handle so the little boy could roll it along. “We are in Hawthorne Village, this is where the school me and your ma’ used to go when we were younger. Just a couple blocks that way is where your uncle Harrow is. Maybe he will show us around after we get settled.”
”Wow!! Okay!” He exclaimed eyes still wide with wonder.
“Kay bub take your bag and hold my hand” The little boy did as he was asked, after a couple minutes of getting Mister Patch Bottom situated . Cooper led them down the street passing old store fronts that were still vivid from the first time he had seen the village when he was eleven.
They came up to a home right next to Sanddust. Right where Harrow had said it would be. It was cute, the fence and small yard nicely groomed with a tree and flowers. He walked up to the green door, Jackie still holding onto his fingers, and knocked. The knock was fallowed quickly by barks behind the door. Those must have been the dogs. He took a glance down at his son who was still looking all around him as if he were on some strange planet and had never seen a house before.
