Charlotte wished that she had been there for James’s big game against Hawthorne. She had planned on going there, cheering the loudest for her husband and give him all of the support that she could muster for him. Unfortunately, she had an interview at Merlin Center for Healing to get into their Healer training program and she was sure that James understood it was something she couldn’t skip out on. The sooner she got into the program, and more she could learn before David came along. She checked her watch while walking back into her shared apartment with her husband and kicked her heels off her swollen feet. She was sure that she did a good job at the interview and was dying to just peel off the layers, soak in their bathtub and wait for James to join her after his game.
Right when she slipped out of her grey jacket, she heard the fireplace roar to life. There was someone coming in through the floo network, or just someone’s face. She rebuttoned her light pink shirt and knelt in front of the fireplace, this way of speaking to someone always troubled her, but she figured it was a decent enough way. She saw the outline of one of the Salem professors in the ashes and smiled at bit,
“Hello Professor Satagori, how may I help you?”
“Hello Mrs Richardson, I need you to come to Salem as quickly as possible. James had an accident during the game and its customary to call the spouse in a moment like this.”
Charlotte felt her heart fall into her stomach as she stepped into the fireplace, and dropped down some of the green powder. She didn’t even care if she was barefoot, or still in her pink blouse and grey a-line skirt, all that mattered was her getting to James’s side and making sure he was alright. She stumbled out of the fireplace and tried to brush some of the warm embers from the bottom of her feet and ran out of Headmaster Madigan’s office, down the familiar paths to the hospital ward.
She could see some familiar faces as she rushed down the halls, some of them trying to stop her to ask her if it was true she was pregnant and married now. She didn’t care about any of them, all that mattered was being with James. Charlotte stopped right in front of the hospital ward and walked inside, scanning the room for James.
“Bama.” She breathed, seeing him in the bed. Her heart felt like it was going to explode when she saw his chest move and everything was alright except for his arm in a blue bag looking thing that wrapped around his neck.
“First game without me and you end up in the hospital?” She asked, trying to keep the smile on her face even though it made her heart sink to see him looking in so much pain.
