It was officially summer. Usually people her age viewed summer as freedom from school, from the dull monotony of classes that occupied over half of their time, and freedom to do whatever the hell they wanted, within reason of course. However, for Summer Macnair, the summer season was all of that and much more. While she was at home, she wasn’t restricted to learning about certain topics, she wasn’t constrained by a curfew, or at least one that was a little less strict than the one she was under at Hogwarts. Not that her parents had anything to be worried about anyways, it wasn’t like she had a boyfriend, in fact, she had never had one, and despite the fact that she continuously told herself that she was because she was working on herself, because she was focusing on her studies, it was starting to make her doubt herself. She knew she was pretty enough, after all she looked a lot like her sister, and Iz was stunning, but she still couldn’t help but think maybe there was something wrong about her. Maybe she was too isolated, maybe she pushed too many people away, or maybe she was just too afraid to stand up and put herself out there. For whatever the reason, she had managed to stay single throughout her entire school career, and it was starting to drive her mad.
Sure, Summer had her fair share of crushes in the past, most of them cringe worthy, but for the most part, she had never acted on them. One of them, probably the most notable one because of what a big part of her life he had become, had been her embarrassing crush on Daemon Nott. Of course she had never admitted it out loud, not to him, not to Iz, but she knew that both of them had probably figured it out at some point, despite the fact that it had completely faded shortly after she found out that him and her sister were seriously into one another. How awkward would that conversation have been? ‘Oh, by the way, you know that guy you’re seriously into? Yeah I kind of like him…’ No, that wasn’t a conversation she was going to have with her sister, and so she had let it go, deciding it was better to at least be in his life as a friend than not at all, because there was no way he would have talked to her after finding out something like that.
Sighing gently, Summer placed her book on the nightstand next to her. There was something about the flowery language of Emily Bronte that was just wasn’t sitting right with her today, and she couldn’t concentrate. Leaning back on her bed, she put her hands behind her head and stared up at the ceiling, dreaming of the fun this summer could hold, if only she could find some way to be a part of it. It wasn’t that Iz didn’t include her, she often did, but a part of her wanted to go out and spend some time with her friends without her older sister, and her pseudo-siblings, looking out for her. Besides, her sister and Daemon had their own problems, their own obligations, and she couldn’t always rely on them to help keep her occupied. Groaning quietly, she turned her head to look at the calendar, and couldn’t help but smile a little. In just a few weeks, she would be going to Germany to visit Lisolette, a friend that she had made at the triwizard tournament, and had been in nearly constant contact with. She was a little surprised her parents were even letting her go, but they had, and she wasn’t about to start questioning it now.
Staring back up at her ceiling, Summer tried to think of something to do, tried to think of a way to relieve her boredom. Deciding to go see what her sister was up to, and to see if maybe Iz wanted to go to the lake or something, she sat up and slid off the edge of her bed, walking towards the door and towards her sister’s room. Her bare feet padded quietly along the wooden floor as she walked the path that she had memorized a long, long time ago. Reaching the door, she knocked gently, nudging the door open and saying her sister’s nickname softly. “Iz?” Peaking her head around her door, she found her sister in much the same position she had been just moments prior, and she smiled slightly, walking all the way in and sitting next to her on the bed. “What are you up to in here?” Waiting for her sister to answer, she tucked her legs up onto the bed, her long brown hair falling over one shoulder. She knew it was only a matter of time before her sister moved out, and she wanted to spend just a little more time with her before that happened.
