Dominique always knew that her mother was fair skinned, that her pale skin and golden hair would drive people insane for her. She had never seen her mother like this. When she held the phone to her ear and looked like a ghost. Niqui leaned against the door frame, trying to figure out what was going on. She heard little bits of French on the other line, her stomach was twisting and knotting in her stomach when she realized that it was Odette on the other end of the line.
Something was wrong in Versailles, and it made her nervous. Seb had been her best friend for years, all of her memories involved him in some way and it was making her absolutely sick trying to figure out what was going on.
"Maman, qu'est-ce qui se passe?" She asked, trying to find out if Seb was alright. She could hear the wailing and she could hear the sobbing.
Fleur took the phone from her ear, looked at her middle child and said the three worst words she would ever be able to hear.
"Renee est mort."
Niqui backed away from the door frame, sure that her own features reflected her mother's even more than usual. Fleur put the phone back against her ear and Niqui ran to her room. She still had some of her clothes from Hogwarts packed away in her truck. She just needed a bag and some clothes. She could hear Victorie playing music in the room next to hers, Niqui was pretty positive that the Golden Girl was in the with Teddy. Louis was away somewhere, probably searching for frogs or salamanders somewhere. She just needed to get out of this house without anyone noticing. There were a million ways she could get to Versailles, but almost all of them were escaping her. She just needed to get to Seb.
"Renee est mort."
The blonde stuffed some underwear, some tshirts and her tooth brush into the bag, she stuffed some coins in the pockets of her torn jeans and grabbed her wand from her side table. She scanned her room and tried to figure out if there was anything else she would need. Niqui tried to catch her breath and turned off the light in her bedroom. Her mother was sobbing on the phone now, her father probably working late and her siblings blissfully unaware that the little girl who was like a sister to all of them was now dead.
"Renee est mort."
She ran out of the room, not bothering to close the door behind her. Once Niqui was on the street, she held her wand out for the Knight's Bus. It seemed the best way to get there. She needed to get there and nothing else in the world made sense. When the giant bus landed in front of her, she tripped up the stairs, gave the address of the place she loved and tossed all of the money in her pocket at the driver. She just needed to get there and make sure that he was alright. She cared for Noelle and Leon and Odette, but Seb. Sebastien was her best friend. The one who was always there for her, who always made her smile and made things okay. Now she had to be there for him. As the bus blazed back to life, she fell backwards onto the bed, trying to wrap her head around what could have happened. Eleven year olds just didn't die. They just didn't. She felt the tears sting her eyes and she tried to hold them back.
"Renee est mort."
When the scenery outside was painfully familiar, she stood up and left the bus. The house that she spent hours running around looked huge and daunting. It was terrifying to think about and she just wanted to find out what happened. Logic escaped her head as she crossed to the backyard, the familiar window that led to Seb's bedroom. If she knew her best friend like she knew that she did, he would be there. Hiding from the world, a quite rage boiling under his skin. Without a single hesitation, she put the bag on her back and started to climb up the ivy lattice that led to his bedroom. She passed by the window to their living room, able to peer in without being caught. Odette and Leon were sobbing, in each other's arms. Noelle was on a solo chair, sobbing into her hands and Seb was no where to be found.
"Renee est mort."
Niqui continued her climb, finally reaching the window that she needed. Niqui pushed open the window a little and looked into the bedroom.
"Seb?" She hoisted herself into the room and closed the window behind her.
