Sabine sat down on the bed that she had been sharing with Jasper for weeks now, looked at the box in her hands and still couldn't believe what she was looking at. It was a ring, more than that, it was an absolutely perfect engagement ring. Vintage and stunning with a large diamond and a white gold band. She wanted to slip it on her finger and dance around the room imagining what it would be like to be married to Jasper, when she realized something important. There was a thin layer of dust over the box, showing that Jasper had it for an unknown amount of time. He could have bought it weeks ago for the Frenchwoman, but there was something nagging in the back of her head that told her he bought this for someone else.
Rose?
She snapped the box shut and placed it next to her on the bed. Who else but Rose? She knew that he felt strongly for the unknown older woman, but he swore to her that there was something bigger between Sabine and himself than some petty feelings that he had for the elderly woman. That he had never loved anyone the way that he loved Sabine. Sabine was living with him for Merlin's sake. She had dinner with Jasper and his mother every night. Sat and had tea and biscuits with Romilda. They talked about everything that they could think of and she felt for sure that Jasper's mother liked her. That Romilda was rooting for Jasper and Sabine to make a future together. Jasper's brother was still missing in action, but she knew that once she met the younger brother they would get along just as well.
Sabine picked up the ring again and looked at it. There was no way he would buy an engagement ring for a married woman. That just wouldn't make any sense. Sabine carefully plucked it from the case and glanced around to make sure that no one was watching and slid it onto her hand. It was as if the ring was personally made for her. It fit so perfectly and flattered her hand. The brunette smiled and knew that he would have to use the jaws of life to get the ring off her finger. It was hers now and he was just going to have to accept it.
This was something that called for cookies.
Rushing from his wing of the Wilkes home, Sabine found her way to the kitchen and started to recall the recipe for chocolate chip and mint cookies that her mother used to make for her and Amelia. Sabine glanced at the clock, realizing that Jasper would be home from the Ministry soon. How would he react to her finding the ring so soon? Was she meant to? Was it all going to surprise him or would he become angry and demand that she remove it? She started to mix the ingredients together, smiling when she would catch the glint of the diamond ring against the sunlight basking into the kitchen.
When she heard the door knob turn, signaling Jasper's return home Sabine was pulling the cookies from the oven.
"Welcome home, mon amour."
