Nevaeh and her family are descendants of Rowena and Helena Ravenclaw. It seems that the story that Helena told everyone about hating the Bloody Baron wasn't entirely 100 percent truthful. There had been a short period where she did give him a chance. Of course it ended horribly, so instead she refused to acknowledge it. This had been about a year or so before her death.
Surprisingly enough the family had kept the name Ravenclaw throughout the centuries that followed and that was the name that Nevaeh had been born with. However, eventually the Ministry caught wind of who exactly she and her family was and when they learned that they wished their daughter to transfer to hogwarts Hogwarts, they forced her family to go by the name Watkins instead.
