Birth Place: Sofia, Bulgaria
Current Residence: A small rural town in Bulgaria/Durmstrang (currently Hogwarts)
Overall History:
Alvah was born in the capital city of Sofia on November 13th, 2007, to Muggle parents. Her parents were hard working, pious people, who had no notion that the magical world existed. For the first few months of Alvah's life, she was everything her parents could wish for, their perfect little girl. They planned to give their daughter a good Christian upbringing, and teach her all the values they held dear. But it wasn't long before it became clear there was something wrong with their baby girl.
At first it was just small things, that were easy to ignore, or to dismiss; a bottle of milk or a toy that Alvah's mother could have sworn she had left on the table were suddenly in Alvah's crib; her mobile seemed to move by itself when no one had wound it up; the music box would open and play incessantly, no matter how many times they closed it, much to Alvah's delight. But before long what was happening couldn't be ignored. As Alvah got older, more and more things started happening; objects would literally fly across the room to her, right in front of her parents eyes, and when she was upset the results could be disastrous. One night, when Alvah was upset and crying, she screamed and shattered all the glass in the room, including the windows.
Her parents were terrified. They didn't know what to do, and feared their daughter. They remained indoors, afraid of other people finding out that their daughter was a freak. Muggleborns were largely ignored in Bulgaria, and although most magical children will exhibit some minor powers at a young age, Alvah was outside the norm. Her parents decided that she was possessed, demonic, and after long they made a decision; they packed up their house and their daughter, and left. They drove for hours, far away from anyone who knew them or anything that could be linked to them, and left their daughter at a Church. After deciding there was no way it could be traced, they left her with her baby bracelet inscribed with her name. They then drove away to start a new life, far from where they dropped their daughter. In the future, when anyone asked, they said they didn't have any children.
Alvah was discovered early in the morning, bawling her eyes out, and was taken in. For a couple of days she stayed in the custody of the Church as it was decided what to do with her, and in those days she revealed herself as 'different'. The Church in question had seen this kind of thing once before, and although they didn't know that it meant Alvah was a witch, and didn't know anything of the magical world, they knew what to do with her; she was sent to an orphanage about an hour away, on the outskirts of a small, rural town, one that, it was known to the Church, took in 'unusual' children as well as normal orphans. She was given the last name Burya, which means 'storm' in Bulgarian, because she was left on a stormy night, and the middle name Anna, which means compassion, grace, and prayers, hoping it would be a good omen for her.
The orphanage in question was run by a Squib. She had started working their when she was young, and now ran the institution, having taken over when the previous owner died. She was a middle aged, bitter women, who shunned her magical family, always feeling second rate around them. The orphanage housed around one hundred children, of which three (including Alvah) were magical.
As Alvah grew up, her powers became more and more pronounced, and more and more of a problem. It was clear that she had more raw magical energy than the other magical children at the orphanage. The 'different' (or 'difficult' children, as they were often referred to as) were picked on by the rest of the kids. They attended the local school with them when they were young, but Alvah was always getting into trouble. She had a temper, and her magic was dangerous when she was angry. She tried hard to suppress it when she was at school, which only made it harder to hold in when she was at the orphanage. Sometimes other students got hurt, and once or twice Alvah would accidentally start a magical fire. More windows were smashed, pipes burst, glasses shattered. Alvah spent more and more time away from the other children.
When the time came for her to go to High School, Alvah, along with the other magical children, were kept back. Durmstrang didn't accept muggleborns, and so they were home schooled. By Ministry Law, all wizards and witches of school age were entitled to a wand and a magical education. Reluctantly, their Squib headmistress took each child to get a wand and magical books as they turned eleven. For that one day, Alvah was in heaven. She entered the small magical town with a scowl on her face, her dark hair falling around her, not meeting anyone's eyes. Because of her exceptional power, Alvah had always been shunned, and she expected the same here. The first place they went to was the wand shop, and when Alvah found the right wand a display of sparks ensued like nothing she'd ever seen. She thought she'd be in trouble, but the shop owner only laughed and called her a 'little firecracker'. After that, Alvah ran from shop to shop, her wide eyes devouring everything. She couldn't get potions equipment, or a broom ("How would we explain that to the other children?") but she got as many books as her arms could carry.
After that day, her magical education went back to being a secret. She studied her books alone, and when she wasn't using them they were kept locked away, along with her wand, which she was forbidden to use. Alvah learned a lot from the books, but it was never enough, and she longed to do practical magic. Finally, she started breaking into the cupboard (she found she could unlock it wandlessly) at night and going out into the freezing cold night, wrapped up warm, to try some small spells.
As Alvah entered her teenage years, everyone knew she was different. The other children called her stupid for not attending their school, and they were scared of the unusual and dangerous things that happened around her, that she seemed to be the cause of. Alvah had no friends, and told herself she liked it that way.
Finally, after years of isolation and keeping her magic a secret, news came that Durmstrang were finally accepting Muggleborn students. Alvah joined the school in her sixth year. She is very much behind on the practical side of things, which only makes it harder being a muggleborn; the anti-muggleborn students take it as proof that she shouldn't have been allowed in the school at all.
