Ari laid back on the table in Merlin Center and just counted the number of tiles above her head. Gaspard was running late, and she refused to allow them to begin the examination without him there. Her daughter was due in a matter of weeks, and she knew that he would want to see her a few more times before she was actually in their arms. So much had happened over the course of her pregnancy, it was insane.
She checked her watch again, five minutes late. She had to smile at it, Gaspard wouldn't even be on time to his own funeral. It was one of the things that she loved about him. He would come in all breathless with messy hair. He would be frazzled and mumble something about one of his books being out of order. Love was a strange thing. A trait that she adored in him, was the exact thing that would drive her mad in someone else. If she had been expecting one of her brothers, or even her mother, she would be hurt by their tardiness. She would insist on the healers going ahead and the person who was late could be damned about it.
Not Gaspard.
Ever since he came into her life he was special. When they spent that first night in her dorm room eating Thai food and watching movies, she knew that he would be someone who she could come to depend on. Something that she didn't have in anyone until then. Sure she had the Madigans, but she reserved herself around them. Always convinced that one toe out of line in their perfect world and she would be tossed on her behind. There was Booker and Felix, but they were her professors. They wouldn't be around forever, and as soon as she graduated she would be another face. At least that's how it felt before. That they would be relived not to have to worry about her hanging around Salem any more. Sparrow was her employer. Even if the redhead insisted that she could talk to her about anything, there were some things that just couldn't come to the work environment.
Then Gaspard waltzed in and changed all of the rules.
She felt alive with him, she laughed more, she cried some, she actually felt like a human being for one of the first times in her life. Ari placed her hand on her stomach and felt her little girl shift around a little bit.
Ten minutes late.
