Overall Appearance:
Standing at an even six feet tall, Anselm may appear rather intimidating at times. The man has a good, solid build, and is fairly muscular. Needless to say, he is in extraordinarily good shape for a man of his age. While certainly not a body-builder, Anselm’s body is mostly muscle with very little fat.
Arguably the most noticeable trait about Anselm is his eyes. Light, ice blue, his eyes are always intensely focused on something, giving the impression that he is deep in thought. His eyes are very piercing, and difficult to look at for long periods of time. He uses this to his advantage when he needs to.
Overall, he has a somewhat handsome face for a man of his age. Anselm has a good, strong jaw, arched cheekbones, and a straight nose. While creases and lines may exist at the corners of his eyes and around his mouth, giving away his age, his lips are still full and his eyes are still captivating, keeping up his good looks. His hair, however, has a rather wild appearance. It is long and tangled, with the addition of his beard, makes him appear rather formidable.
Anselm is the sort of man who walks with a purpose. No matter where he’s going, or what he’s doing, his steps are taken in a meaningful, steady gait. In addition to this trait, Anselm always has impeccably good posture. He never slouches, and always keeps his back firm and straight. His shoulders never sag, but are held back. In truth, the Professor is almost like a wooden board in this respect.
One simple tell that the man has, however, is a nervous habit. If something is making Anselm uncomfortable, he has the tendency to fidget, and look at the floor. Not much makes the man nervous or uncomfortable, but when it does, it is always easy to tell.
Anselm has a rather low voice. He speaks quietly, but with purpose. When he speaks, he expects to be listened to. As a Professor, Anselm finds it rather exhausting having to shout to get something across… so he doesn’t. He simply speaks quietly… and carries a big stick.
The Professor’s clothes are typically broken in or older, since he is doesn’t really bother with putting on a pristine appearance. He would rather be comfortable than look nice. He prefers to wear darker colors (particularly blues and blacks), but will typically wear anything he can find. Naturally, he does have nicer clothes for special events, but he prefers not to go to those anyway. One accessory to his clothing that Anselm nearly always wears is a brown leather jacket.

Overall Personality:
Once he warms up to someone, Anselm is a very friendly, kind-hearted man. However, the Professor can be rather blunt, almost to the point of being rude. He doesn't mean to be, but that's just what happens. Many people (mainly friends) joke that he lacks the "brain-to-mouth-filter" that everyone else seems to have. This can lead to awkward social occurrences, but Anselm can usually laugh off any mistakes he makes. Usually.
Sometimes, the Potions Professor can't laugh it off. He has plenty of good qualities, but he has his bad ones, too, one of which being that he is prone to bouts of depression. It can sometimes take a lot for him to get depressed, but sometimes it can hit him at the drop of a pin. Another not-so-good trait the Professor has is a quick temper. It doesn't take much to make Anselm angry, and once he is... well, he can get violent if the occasion calls for it, and prefers to solve confrontation with Duels rather than with diplomacy.
The Potions Professor is also extremely pragmatic. He deals with things that are dictated by practical consequences rather than fool about with theories or hypotheses. Ironically, for being practical, Anselm can be extraordinarily spontaneous. He likes a good adventure and a bit of danger, and doesn't mind a good fist-fight now and again, either. When it comes to a challenge, Anselm won't turn it down.
Being an extrovert, the Professor can be a bit, well… spontaneous. He's attracted to dangerous situations, and is extremely venturesome when it comes to testing just how far he can go. When given free reign, he is sure to run with it until something stops him. Anselm, however, can become a bit impatient, leading him to occasionally become irrational in his actions.
Even with his spontaneity, Anselm is clear-headed under pressure. Throw him in the thick of things, and he's going to work better under pressure than he would if given a lot of time to complete a task. He's not lazy; he simply… works better with a deadline. Sometimes, having this level-headed approach to working under pressure can be an extreme advantage. His attraction to dangerous situations, however, can be a disadvantage that may leave him dead one day.
Oddly enough for someone who enjoys walking on the wild side of life, Anselm does enjoy learning. In fact, he loves it. Many early mornings and in breaks between classes, he can be found in the library, reading this book or that, researching some new esoteric topic, soaking in information like a sponge. He's curious like a cat, and tends to want to know everything about everything. This leads him to getting under the feet of a lot of people (he just wants to ask a few questions!) that he shouldn't, and lands him in trouble sometimes. Hey, curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. He never stops looking for answers.
One thing Anselm does not have is tact. He's honest to a fault, too. He is judgmental, and forms quick impressions of people and tends to treat them according to how he has judged them. He does his best not to lie to anyone, especially not friends or family. He takes honesty seriously. What's the point in lying to someone, anyway? That, and lying is immoral.
Anselm is rather proud, though it doesn't often show. He's proud of his accomplishments and how far he's come, since he does have the tendency to get distracted, even when fiercely determined to achieve a certain goal. He's not arrogant or pompous, however. He simply has a quiet pride that says, at the end of the day, "I did it!"

Overall History:
Anselm grew up in a peaceful Germany. He was the eldest son of two magical parents, and grew up as happy as any child could. He was born the first of six, having two younger sisters and three younger brothers, though his youngest brother and sister are too young for him to know them very well.
Overall, their family was a happy one. Of course, the siblings fought and squabbled, as siblings tend to do, but their home was one filled with love. They all loved each other, their whole family, and the life they lived.
Anselm went off to Durmstrang for his education, though he had a choice between Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. In his first year, he was sorted into Grimm, though he never followed the stereotype of hating muggle-borns. While not particularly academic, he did well in his studies, particularly in Potions and in Dueling.
He graduated with grades decent enough to please both himself and his parents. Once in the real world, however, he wasn't entirely sure what to do with himself. This led him to travel the world for multiple years, until he eventually ended up in the United States.
Once in the United States, Anselm found himself drawn to historically magical places, particularly Salem, Massachusetts. He was twenty-five when he arrived in Salem for the first time, and twenty-nine when he returned to apply for the job of Potions Professor, which he was given.
At thirty-three, Anselm was granted another job at the school: Head of Hawthorne. Anselm was proud to accept the job, and vowed to do his best at it. He continued teaching at Salem, and still teaches there today.
